 Washington, D.C., January 20, 2021 – Brady celebrates the beginning of the Biden-Harris administration and the inauguration of President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris. The Biden-Harris administration was elected on the most comprehensive gun violence prevention platform. Brady looks forward to working with them to make that platform a reality and to stop the more than 100 deaths a day from gun violence in the United States.

Brady President Kris Brown shared:

“Today is Day One of the Biden-Harris administration: Brady looks forward to working with President Biden and Vice President Harris as they work to strengthen our democracy and increase and safeguard access to the ballot for all Americans and take concrete steps to prevent gun violence.

President Biden and Vice President Harris have shown that they will not hesitate to act to use the power of their offices to enact common-sense gun violence prevention policies and regulations. They ran and were elected on the most comprehensive gun violence prevention platform in U.S. history. They are prepared to take a whole-of-government approach to this effort, and we are prepared to assist them. That work begins today.”

About Brady’s Priorities for Gun Violence Prevention:

The Executive Branch and Office of the President are essential in the effort to prevent gun violence. Among the regulatory and executive actions that President Biden and his administration can take are needed reforms, such as reclassifying ghost gun kits as firearms and appointing a National Director of Gun Violence Prevention. Brady also looks forward to the Department of Justice returning to its long-standing precedent of supporting and participating in gun industry reform impact litigation. Brady previously worked with the Clinton Administration to obtain a landmark settlement against Smith & Wesson in March of 2000.

In order to set priorities for necessary legislative goals, Brady is recommending decisive executive actions in the following five areas:

Enhance and strengthen the Brady Background Check system;

Improve gun industry oversight and accountability;

Prevent the diversion of firearms to the illegal market;

Reform the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF); and

Promote public health and safety.

For more details, read Brady’s report, “Leading with Action, Addressing Gun Violence with Executive Authority.”

About Joe Biden and Kamala Harris’ Work on Gun Violence Prevention:

During his time as a senator, Joe Biden was a critical voice in shepherding through both the Brady Bill and the federal assault weapons ban. He is an original sponsor of the Violence Against Women Act. He forcefully opposed the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act (PLCAA) which gives the gun industry unprecedented protections under law. As Vice President during the Obama-Biden administration, President Biden was tasked with developing and implementing common-sense policies to keep Americans safe while the U.S. Senate refused to pass comprehensive legislation. President Biden’s work helped to close loopholes and expand resources for Americans.

Vice President Harris has championed gun violence prevention at every opportunity, from her time as a District Attorney, as Attorney General, as a U.S. Senator, and during her campaign for the Democratic nomination for President. In that campaign, Vice President Harris was steadfast in her commitment to ending our nation’s gun violence epidemic, including taking executive action to improve our nation’s gun safety laws within the first 100 days. As Attorney General, Vice President Harris championed implicit bias and procedural justice training for law enforcement while supporting efforts to remove firearms from persons who are legally not allowed to have them. She continued these efforts in the U.S. Senate, where Vice President Harris strongly advocated for comprehensive gun violence prevention reform as a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, helping to draw attention to the Senate’s dangerous lack of action on gun violence and putting forward proposals to help make our nation safer.

A Biden-Harris administration will ensure that the Biden Plan to End Our Gun Violence Epidemic becomes law. That plan prioritizes stopping the flow of weapons into our communities by strengthening background checks, banning the sale of assault weapons in the U.S., properly funding the background check system, banning ‘ghost guns’ and ghost gun kits, and investing in community-based solutions to reduce conflict and prevent violence. In total, this plan will address gun violence in all of its forms, improving federal laws and systems while working with state and local governments to implement solutions that work with and within communities to prevent violence.

Brady looks forward to working with a Biden-Harris administration to make this plan a reality and to end gun violence.

"TAKE ACTION, NOT SIDES: BRADY APPLAUDS U.S. HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES FOR SWIFTLY IMPEACHING PRESIDENT TRUMP

https://www.bradyunited.org/press-releases/trump-second-impeachment-bipartisan

Washington, D.C., January 13, 2021 - Brady applauds the bipartisan vote in the U.S. House of Representatives to impeach President Donald J. Trump for inciting a violent attack on Congress and calls on the U.S. Senate to quickly convene a trial and remove him from office.

Brady President
Kris Brown shared:

“The U.S. House of Representatives has put country before partisanship and taken action, not sides, by voting to impeach President Trump just one week after he incited a violent mob to attack the U.S. Capitol. This impeachment, with 10 Republicans, including Rep. Cheney (R-WY), Chairwoman of the Republican Conference, joining with their colleagues across the aisle in the most bipartisan impeachment vote in history, is a needed step to hold the President accountable and show that no person is above the law in the United States of America.

Brady calls on the U.S. Senate to reconvene immediately to try the President and convict him for what is clearly an impeachable offense. Even as we approach the constitutionally determined end of his term, President Trump must be removed from office and prevented from ever holding elected office again. Every day that he is in office, he remains a threat to our nation’s public safety, and the threat of him serving in any capacity in elected office must be permanently removed.”
